AmaWaterways officially welcomed AmaMagdalena to its fleet during a historic naming ceremony on June 17 in the UNESCO-listed city of Mompox, Colombia. As the first luxury cruise ship to sail the Magdalena River, AmaMagdalena marks a new era in river cruising. Colombian entrepreneur and interior designer Marianna Schlegel Donado, who contributed to the ship’s design, served as godmother.
Designed for just 60 guests, AmaMagdalena offers an intimate onboard experience with a sun deck pool, fitness room, main restaurant featuring Latin American and Western cuisine, and an al fresco specialty dining venue. Guests can choose between two immersive seven-night itineraries—Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia—sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla.
Highlights include a private Barranquilla Carnival celebration, exclusive jazz in Mompox, birdwatching, and a visit to Palenque—the first free town in the Americas. Optional land extensions are available in Medellín, Cartagena, and Panama City. A second ship, AmaMelodia, will join the river later this year.
