American Cruise Lines Announces Two New Riverboats, Opening New Ways to Explore America

American Cruise Lines is continuing its rapid expansion with the announcement of two new riverboats, American Beauty and American Rhapsody. While the names may be new, what is particularly interesting for travelers is where these ships will take them, and the opportunities they will create for exploring some of America’s most scenic and historically rich waterways.

Both vessels are currently under construction at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland. American Beauty is scheduled to enter service in September 2028, while American Rhapsody is expected to begin sailing in 2029.

For travelers who prefer small ships, immersive experiences, and destinations that can be difficult to experience from a conventional cruise ship, the announcements are worth watching.

American Beauty Will Explore the Mississippi and Gulf Coast

Scheduled to debut in 2028, American Beauty will join American Cruise Lines’ Mississippi River fleet.

The 180-guest riverboat is expected to operate the line’s 8-day Upper Mississippi River cruises between St. Louis, Missouri, and St. Paul, Minnesota. The ship will also operate new 8-day Gulf Coast itineraries between New Orleans and Pensacola, Florida.

For adventure-minded travelers, the appeal of these itineraries goes well beyond simply sailing from one port to another.

The Upper Mississippi offers an opportunity to experience the landscapes, communities, history, and culture of America’s heartland at a pace that is difficult to replicate on a larger cruise ship. Towns along the river provide access to historic sites, local attractions, scenic landscapes, and regional experiences.

The Gulf Coast itineraries introduce a very different environment. A voyage between New Orleans and Pensacola combines the character of the Mississippi Delta with the coastal landscapes and communities of the northern Gulf of Mexico.

That combination could make American Beauty particularly appealing to travelers who enjoy variety, rather than spending an entire vacation in one type of destination.

American Rhapsody Heads to the Pacific Northwest

If dramatic scenery and outdoor exploration are what you are looking for, American Rhapsody may be the more intriguing of the two new ships.

The 180-guest riverboat is scheduled to debut in 2029 on American Cruise Lines’ Columbia and Snake Rivers itineraries between Portland, Oregon, and Clarkston, Washington. The ship is expected to operate the line’s 9-day Columbia & Snake Rivers cruises.

This region is already one of the most compelling destinations for domestic river cruising.

The Columbia and Snake Rivers pass through a landscape shaped by dramatic geology, mountains, forests, farmland, waterfalls, and the history of the American West. For travelers who enjoy combining cruising with exploration ashore, the Pacific Northwest offers plenty of opportunities to get off the ship and experience the destination firsthand.

The itinerary also provides access to a part of the United States that many travelers might otherwise overlook when planning a cruise vacation.

For adventure-cruise enthusiasts, that is precisely the attraction.

Designed for the Small-Ship Experience

American Beauty and American Rhapsody will be modern American Riverboats designed to accommodate 180 guests. Both ships will feature private balcony accommodations, including suites and single rooms, along with multiple public spaces designed for relaxing and enjoying the scenery.

The ships will have six decks and will include restaurants, cafés, lounges, fitness facilities, and top-deck spaces with walking tracks. They will also feature American Cruise Lines’ 1,500-square-foot Signature Suite.

For travelers accustomed to small-ship cruising, the significance of the 180-guest capacity is important.

A smaller ship can provide a more intimate atmosphere and allow travelers to spend more time focused on the destination rather than the ship itself. Private balconies also make it easier to enjoy the scenery without having to find a place on a crowded public deck.

And on a river cruise, that scenery is part of the experience.

A Growing Choice of U.S. Adventure Cruises

The announcement of American Beauty and American Rhapsody is part of a much larger expansion by American Cruise Lines.

The company says the two vessels will become its 29th and 30th ships. The additions follow several other new vessels entering the fleet, reflecting the company’s increasingly broad selection of U.S. river and small-ship itineraries.

That growth is significant for travelers interested in domestic cruising.

For many years, travelers interested in river cruising had relatively few options outside Europe. Today, America’s rivers and waterways are becoming increasingly accessible through small-ship and river-cruise itineraries.

American Cruise Lines now offers more than 50 U.S. river cruises, covering destinations and waterways throughout the country.

That means travelers do not necessarily need to cross the Atlantic to experience the pleasures of river cruising.

Why Adventure Travelers Should Pay Attention

The most interesting aspect of these new ships isn’t simply that American Cruise Lines is adding two more vessels.

It is the destinations they make easier to explore.

The Upper Mississippi, Gulf Coast, and Pacific Northwest offer dramatically different experiences. Yet they share several characteristics that appeal to adventure-cruise travelers: distinctive landscapes, smaller communities, cultural and historical attractions, and opportunities to explore beyond the major cruise ports.

That is one of the strengths of small-ship cruising in the United States.

Instead of treating the ship as the primary destination, the river becomes the pathway to discovering the places along it.

And for travelers who would rather spend their vacation exploring than simply lounging aboard a large resort ship, that distinction matters.

Looking Ahead to 2028 and 2029

American Beauty and American Rhapsody are still several years away from entering service, but their future itineraries provide another reason to start thinking about domestic river cruising now.

American Beauty, arriving in September 2028, will bring a new option to the Upper Mississippi and Gulf Coast.

American Rhapsody, scheduled for 2029, will add another modern riverboat to the Columbia and Snake Rivers, one of the country’s most spectacular river-cruising regions.

For travelers who enjoy discovering America by water, these new ships represent more than additional capacity.

They represent more opportunities to see familiar parts of the United States from a completely different perspective.

And sometimes, the best adventures are closer to home than we think.
