Cruising Alaska

Day 6: Cruising the Alaska Inside Passage

Today’s sail takes you on a journey through the awe-inspiring Tracy Arm Fjord, where our small ship glides through the narrow, winding waterways. Over a 25-mile stretch, the fjord remains remarkably slender, scarcely a mile across, with towering cliffs rising more than 3,000 feet above the water. These towering cliffs form a dramatic backdrop, while valleys open up to reveal endless snow-capped peaks, stretching high into the blue sky. The mountainsides are a beautiful blend of ancient forests and gleaming glaciers.

As you continue, countless waterfalls cascade from the cliffs, merging with the fjord’s crystal-clear waters below. The journey reaches its peak as the ship nears the magnificent twin Sawyer Glaciers—massive ice formations that have shaped this incredible fjord. Seals rest on floating ice floes with their pups, creating a scene of peaceful serenity.

To enhance the experience, the crew serves up a delightful hot-chocolate bar with a variety of toppings and liqueurs, warming you up as you take in the stunning surroundings. This untouched wilderness, largely unchanged since John Muir’s visit in 1879, echoes his description of a landscape “shut in by sublime cliffs, nobly sculptured, and adorned with waterfalls and fringes of trees, bushes, and patches of flowers.” Tracy Arm Fjord’s beauty is truly a natural masterpiece, where the raw splendor of the world is on full display.

Petersburg, Alaska

Day 7: Petersburg, AK

As your ship docks in Petersburg, take in the majestic view of mountains rising into the clouds, their snow-capped peaks shimmering in the sunlight. Founded over a century ago by Norwegian fishermen, Petersburg remains a vibrant Alaskan fishing town, where the rhythm of the sea still drives the community. Locals and guides are eager to share their enthusiasm and knowledge, offering a glimpse into the time-honored traditions and hidden gems of their beloved town.

Enhance your visit with an exhilarating flightseeing adventure, soaring above towering glaciers, expansive valleys, and tranquil bays. Wander through the town’s charming shops and museums, or enjoy a refreshing hike along the scenic waterfront trails. For a more adventurous experience, consider chartering a fishing boat to explore the rich waters of Frederick Sound, or embark on a jet boat tour to the captivating LeConte Glacier Bay, where nature’s beauty is on full display.

Wrangell’s picturesque bay offers a stunning view of the town, nestled in a vast valley and bordered by towering coastal mountains. To the north, the Stikine River stretches out into the ocean, its waters branching into a maze of rivulets across a sprawling delta. During the salmon runs, this rich ecosystem becomes a haven for wildlife—eagles dive, seals play, and black and brown bears feast on the plentiful fish. From designated viewing spots, you can safely observe this lively natural spectacle.

For those seeking a bit more excitement, take a jet boat ride up the historic Stikine River, once a crucial Gold Rush route. In Wrangell, savor the flavors of the sea with fresh salmon and halibut dishes, immerse yourself in the vibrant Tlingit culture, or wander the wilderness to pick wild blueberries and huckleberries, which grow abundantly in the surrounding forests.

Ketchikan, Alaska

At Saxman Totem Park, admire 25 towering totem poles, each a faithful replica of those left behind when native communities relocated to urban areas. Experience the thrill of a lively lumberjack show, where skilled loggers demonstrate traditional techniques that shaped the area’s history. Relax on your private, furnished balcony as you glide past a rich and ecologically vital estuary system, where winding rivers converge with the sea. Keep watch for marine life below—playful dolphins, lounging seals, and the occasional passing whale—while above, coastal birds soar gracefully against a backdrop of lush, forested shores.
