Mount Spurr Volcano near Anchorage showing some activity

Officials in Anchorage are closely monitoring Mount Spurr, located 73 miles away, due to a recent increase in seismic activity.

The volcano last erupted in 1953 and 1992, with both events blanketing the city in volcanic ash. This ash poses a significant risk to jet engines, as ingestion can cause them to fail. During the 1992 eruption, Anchorage Airport was shut down for nearly 24 hours, and rail and coach services also experienced disruptions due to the strain on their engines.
