Sitka residents to decide on cruise passenger limit

Sitka, Alaska, residents are set to vote on a proposed cap on cruise passenger traffic in a referendum tentatively scheduled for May 30. The proposal seeks to limit daily cruise passengers to 4,500 and annual arrivals to 300,000, while also restricting port calls to six days per week.

The petition, initiated by the local group Small Town Soul, highlights the sharp increase in cruise visitors over recent years—rising from 289,753 in 2019 to 383,000 in 2022, and reaching 585,000 in 2023.
